Hello Blogmas readers!! To be honest this was a long shot for me and the fact that it came out somewhat successful shocked me. I am so impatient with things like this and even though I may have kind of burned them I am ready for round two at least.
Note to self……DO NOT TURN THE BROILER ON, NOT EVEN FOR 2 MINUTES!
Lets start at the beginning. I decided I wanted the smell of Christmas to fill my whole apartment for the day so I began with simmering a pot of water and apple cider with cranberries, cinnamon sticks, and oranges. I let that simmer for about 20 minutes and it smelt amazing! Keep in mind you can keep it going longer or put it in a jar with an open lid to keep the scent going for a while but I wanted to get a start on the dried oranges. I wanted the orange slices to soak up the other flavors and scents and for the most part it worked quite well until the damn broiler.
After I picked all the orange slices out I lightly dabbed them with paper towels to soak some of the juices out and then laid them across a tin foil lined baking sheet. I then placed the orange slices into my preheated 210° F oven for increments of 30 minutes at a time for about 3 hours total. After I reached the 3 hour mark was when I got a little impatient and my oranges looked perfect but still a little juicy so I thought to turn the broiler on for just 2 minutes to see what would happen and well……they burned. I’m sure you can understand as to why I was really really mad.
They could have been fantastic but I soiled everything! I was able to salvage a few of them though so that was lucky. I will definitely be revisiting this DIY again and even though this may not have been the best DIY post since it was pretty much a fail at least you now know not to use the broiler….I know I learned something from this haha
If you are patient unlike me at least you will now have some beautiful orange slices to place around your house or use as vase fillers. I’ve even seen some people on Pinterest use them as ornaments.
I’m sure that if you guys try to make these dried oranges they will turn out much better than mine did. I just through the ones that burned into the garbage bin and it made me even more angry haha damn broiler….
